Bruce Carter:  A pilot is a vitally important episode.  There is a lot that has to be set up.  The main characters and their basic relationships, the whole "situation" of the situation comedy.  The most important thing is to "hook" the audience on the show so they want to come back next week.  And - most pilots have to also sell advertisers on sponsoring the show before it is aired to the public.  So before any of us every met Zoey - she was already a winner, having passed that first, crucial test with the advertisers.

Bruce Carter: This episode, being the first, is important because it is our first glimpse at all of the principal characters. It establishes the location, situation, and at least some of the story arcs. It has also been combined with episode 1.2 in the first Zoey 101 novelization "Girls Got Game" - as living relationships are not completely defined at the end of episode 1. The conflict between Nicole and Dana is a continuing story arc that is only fully resolved with a new roommate in episode 2.1.
