Zoey and a new girl - Lisa - were in the class and walk off discussing the

incident. Zoey explains that bad things often happen to Stacey - she is a bit

clumsy. Lisa remembers when Stacey fell off a roof into a rose bush,
the girls have to go opposite directions to their next class.

After Lisa rides off on her Jet-X, Michael joins Zoey. He didn't know Zoey
knew Lisa, and obviously has a crush on Lisa. Zoey tells Michael to just ask
her out, but Michael knows she has a boyfriend, which puts her off limits.
But - Zoey explains she just broke up with him! So Michael wants to rush off
to talk to her, but doesn't know what to say. He borrows Zoey's Jet- X, even
though she really doesn't want to loan it, she has a long walk to her next
class!

Boys' dorm room ---

Chase and Logan are battling it out on a go-cart video game. Chase wins - for
the tenth time! Logan tells him if it were real go-carts, he would win. They
challenge each other to a real go-cart race!

Michael has caught up to Lisa at the smoothie stand, and says hello. He is
really nervous. Lisa doesn't know he had a pink Jet-X, but he is about to
explain it is Zoey's when he sets off the alarm. When he gets off the Jet-X,
his zipper gets stuck to the seat. Embarrassed beyond measure, he pushes the
Jet-X off.

Girls' dorm room. Lola is helping Quinn do hula hoops to break a PCA hula
hoop record. Zoey knocks - interrupting them. Zoey forgot her key! The girls
let her in, and Quinn gets some paint so she can customize the key again.

Michael shows up at the door with Zoey's Jet-X, and they laugh when he tells
them he caught his zipper on it. In the course of the conversation, Michael
admits he likes Lisa, and Lola thinks it is cute. Michael explains that he
can't even talk to her without something messing up. Michael asks Quinn to
get it off - she hands him some wire cutters with very large and impressive
jaws. She tells him to be careful!

Michael leaves, and the girls concoct a scheme for Lisa to see him sing at
"Open Mic" night. As they talk about how cute, funny, and smart he is - they
hear a crash outside, the Jet-X has fallen on Michael, and he is pinned
underneath. The alarm is sounding again.

Outdoors on campus, Chase is assembling a go-cart - the old fashioned way. A
lawnmower has been stripped of its engine nearby. Stacey - now on crutches -
asks Chase what he is doing. He tells her about the go-cart, she talks about
spraining her left "glute." Chase tells her about the competition with Logan,
and Stacey says she thinks Logan is "hot and spicy"!

Logan races up in his top of the line, pre-assembled go-cart. He makes fun of
Chase's go-cart - Chase is obviously worried and tries to invoke a rule that
didn't exist - that they make a go-cart. The problem is - that was not part
of the rules. They were supposed to each "get" a go-cart. Logan leaves, with
Stacey protesting and trying to get him to stay.

Open Mic night, everybody is there in the audience. Michael is up next, and
Zoey tells him Lisa is in the front row. He is NOT happy - he knows he
freezes up around her. He even tries to leave.

Michael tries to sing - but is too nervous. In fact, he gets so nervous, he
throws up in front of Lisa, soaking her shoes. She rushes off to clean up.

Sad Flute playing is heard around Maxwell Hall, as Zoey looks for Michael. She
finds him in a closet with his flute. He ditched basketball practice.
Michael is upset with her for inviting Lisa to open mic night. She
apologizes, and promises to help Michael win Lisa. But until she does - he is
back to his flute. Zoey closes the closet door and leaves.

Zoey finds Lisa outdoors doing yoga. She threw out the shoes - but is not mad
at Michael, for the wrong reason. When Michael threw up, he got some bits on
Greg, the guy next to her. When they went outside, they got to talking and got
together. Greg comes up to join them, and it is a bit of an uncomfortable
situation for Zoey as they kiss and are affectionate. She knows how this will
make Michael feel.

The parking lot the day of the big race ---

Logan is there, wearing a racing suit. Chase joins him, but his go- cart is
nowhere in evidence. Logan thinks he chickened out, but Quinn and Lola drive
up in it. Now it is Logan's turn to be nervous - if Chase enlisted Quinn's
help, he knows Chase has a hot go-cart! And indeed, as Quinn stops the motor,
she pushes buttons on a sophisticated computer control panel. Quinn is his
mechanic, and tells Logan a long list of improvements she made. Logan tries
to invoke rules this time - but Chase corrects him. The look of satisfaction
tells it all!

Both boys get in their carts, Stacey cheers Logan on. Quinn starts his motor,
the sound makes Chase really nervous. Lola has the green flag and starts the
race. But - Logan is clearly the class of the field as he beats Chase off the
starting line and leads the first two laps ----

Fade to outdoors, where Michael is sitting with Zoey, crying. Zoey broke the
news to him about Lisa and Greg. She tells him it was just bad luck. He
starts with the flute again.

Fade back to the race - the girls are cheering their favorites. Logan is
still in the lead.

Fade back to outdoors, Michael is still playing the flute. Zoey tries to
encourage him by telling him maybe they will break up, but Lisa and Greg show
up and sit at a table nearby. Now Michael is really depressed.

Fade back to the race. Logan is still in the lead at the final lap. Quinn
tells Chase to hit a red button, and Chase rockets across the finish line ahead
of Logan. Only - he can't stop! He drives right on off the parking lot,
headed for parts unknown.

Fade back to outdoors, with Greg being silly with Lisa. Michael's flute
playing is louder, and people are staring. They hear a funny noise - it is
Chase and his go-cart. Chase is headed straight at the table where Greg and
Lisa are sitting. Greg abandons Lisa and runs off - leaving a horrified Lisa
in the path of Chase's go-cart! At the last second, Michael runs and grabs
Lisa out of the path of the go-cart. Chase hits the table, smashing it to
pieces. He is NOT OK - at least at first.

Lisa realizes Michael just saved her life. Michael is a little slow to
realize that he really did. They kiss, a long, protracted kiss. Greg comes
back to find her kissing Michael - and leaves, frustrated.

At the next open mic, Michael and Lisa are singing a duet together on stage,
with everybody cheering them on.

Closing line - none

ANALYSIS:

A bit of a mistake - you can clearly see that Michael's zipper is NOT caught on
the seat as he begins to leave the smoothie stand.

It is unknown when Zoey quit wearing her signature key necklace, but she
renews the practice in this episode.

There is an inside gag with the oversized wire cutters in that they are large
enough to cut through just about anything. They could presumably sever a
vital organ ---

"Open Mic" was the original working title of the episode. It was changed at
some point to "Michael Loves Lisa." The titles are not set until shortly
before airing - when Sarah worked as an extra on "The Great Vince Blake," it
and the other episode she worked on were simply known by their production
numbers (which do not always match the order aired). "The Great Vince Blake"
was originally known as "Cheating."

A Jet-X is not nearly heavy enough to pin down Michael. Nevertheless, it was
quite a handful for a little girl on "Zoey's Tutor."

Stacy has obviously forgiven Chase for destroying her Q-Tip dream house in
"Chase's Girlfriend".

Sean almost loses it when he talks with Stacey about spraining her left "glute"
- you can see him almost break into laughter.

The song Michael attempts to sing the first time at open mic is the same one
he and Lisa sing as duet at the end.

When Stacey shushes Chase and Logan at open mic - Chase reacts as though she
spit all over him. Another little detail adding to Stacey's comic nature.

A little continuity issue - only Stacey leaves open mic to clean up her shoe.

We do not see the boy next to her leave.

More expert acting from Jamie. I do stop action on a DVD to do these
summaries. The complex situations in the Zoey, Lisa, and Greg scene are
mirrored perfectly in her expressions, which are correct for the contradictory
feelings she has to express.

Although not specifically mentioned, somehow Logan has landed a full
sponsorship from Blix - PCA's fictional energy drink.

More evidence of four Zoey chicks - Quinn, Lola, and Stacey all together
cheering the boys racing. Stacey for Logan, of course.

Stacey doesn't need her crutches any more at the next open mic night, and is
quite a dancer.

Chris Massey is an accomplished singer, having performed "The Lion King" on
Broadway.
